We took it to The Bridge

Wow, I think we had another great Soup. The run up is always nerve-wracking; will all the guests turn up, how much will we raise, will any of the projects drop out, will the entertainer make it, will we run out of soup? We always worry, but it always seems to turn out well. It must be down to the ingredients.  Firstly the passionate people who pitch great projects, to the wonderfully enthusiastic people volunteering, and then topped with the awesome warm and generous people who attend our events.

Like Matt Brabner, who persuaded his boss and colleagues at Natural Balances to dedicate their Bright10 run to  previous pitchers, Rhythmix. How great is that, and completely in the spirit of BrightonSoup. It’s always such a great crowd at our events, all wanting to be part of something bigger and to support each other. It was great to see that two thirds of you were attending your first Soup!

As usual it was really hard to decide on who to vote for. We had great impassioned pitches from Debbie for Cook and Creche, helping people eat healthy on a budget – with child care 2016-09-23-213025-088-sla-copyincluded; Xavier with republic, helping the hardest to reach young people learn a skill, gain confidence and get work – all through coffee; Duncan from Brighton Bike Hub about his DIY community workshop cycle repair project, where volunteers and users help each other. In the end it was Elaine from The Hummingbird Project – who plans to encourage local folk to foster unaccompanied children from the Calais refugee camps – who got the vote and takes £462 in door money and donations.

Julian from Free Uni Brighton, winner of our last event at Emmaus, came back to tell us how they’ve gotten on since then and how the money you gave them has helped them to continue giving free education for all regardless of your ability to pay. If you want to do some learning of your own, Forensic Crime or Latin maybe, then get in touch.

2016-09-23-210302-1279-wca-copyAs always we like you to be entertained with some musical genius, and we had the talented Harry Osborne performing some of his songs. Some deep, jazzy and some funky, I think we speak for everyone when we say it was superb. Thanks Harry!

We also met the guys from Middlesbrough Soup hope4boro! It’s always great to meet fellow Soupers and share our learning and experiences – we picked up some great suggestions. Obviously we we’re super busy on the night but it was good to have you there so thanks for coming, 2016-09-23-185125-026-sla-copyWe hope to be up your way soon. We visited Ely Soup a while back and we’re definitely keen to get out more and attend other soups. Soup Love!

And speaking of soup love, a big thanks to our awesome soup makers; we had another 5 tasty soups to try out. Tom from The Soup Dept couldn’t be there again, but gave us soup anyway. Lizzie and Sam came back again and we had a BrightonSoup newcomer Connie, who works at The Bridge Kitchen. All were souper amazing, so check out what deliciousness they made us here.

A special mention has to go to Sam and her team at The Bridge – who invited us over, let us use their lovely space and and made us feel really, really welcome. And they gave us two delicious soups too. Thanks!

It was great he took the time to join us and had some very lovely heartfelt words to say at the end of the night. Supporting what we try to achieve at BrightonSoup and to all the projects and people that are involved. He’s already asked to be kept in the loop for our next events, so he can join us again. Is BrightonSoup addictive?

Next up we’re back at Community Base in central Brighton on the 2nd December, so save the date and more details will follow. But to finish up, we’d like to say again a big thank you to everyone involved. Without you all we wouldn’t be able to keep going.

Soup Pot Share

Whilst every soup event is special, there was definitely something in the air (sorry, Phil) at our last event. And not simply because it was our 1st birthday :).

#2016-07-01-194638-#3190-RBOLLRegular Soup attendees and recent converts know our nights are about bringing people together to listen, eat and vote for one of the groups pitching and effect change in some way for our communities.

But on Friday 1st July, Ali Ghanimi from Free University Brighton – who won the vote on the night – stood up, thanked everybody for their support and announced their intention to share the £876.25 Soup pot with their fellow pitchers from Esteem, Brighton Oasis Project and Women Over 50 Film Festival!

This truly embodies the spirit of BrightonSoup and the ethos of community partnering. Rock on!

And this happened before they knew Ahmed el Dessouki of Papa John’s Pizza Brighton had just offered £300 to be split amongst the runners up. He only dropped by with his family for some soup and a vote, but maybe that was whatever was in the air again.

So everyone who pitched not only went home with some useful new contacts but also £294 to help with their community projects!

#2016-07-01-194717-#3194-RBOLLMaybe it was the venue. The Revive Cafe is warm friendly space on the Emmaus grounds, and the people who live and work at Emmaus give out a beautiful helpful vibe.

This was the perfect place for soup, to sit and hear pitches delivered with passion and humour, where each had a story to bring to life what the funding would mean to their project.

And the perfect place to enjoy the delicious soups provided once again by our generous chefs – Tom, Lizzie, Sam and Matteo. Along with a few Papa John’s Pizzas and all the food guests brought along to share.#2016-07-01-194805-#3204-RBOLL

All that was missing was some entertainment, and it very nearly was missing. Our scheduled artist failed to appear (thanks) so we had to find an alternative at very short notice. Fortunately Charlie Anjos stepped up to provide some brilliant entertainment, giving us acoustic versions of some of his fave songs. I can’t get Perfect Skin by Peace out of my head now.

Well, he does keep playing it around the house :).

So a magic night and a great way to end our first year. Thank you all for coming along to help us celebrate. A very big thanks to Joel, Andy, Ian and all at Emmaus for providing us with a great venue and putting up with our reorganising their community cafe and kitchen for the evening! We hope it was worth it – we met a lot of lovely people who thought it was.

St George & The Community Soup Dragons!

Friday night was BrightonSoup night and my oh my, last Friday was epic. Thank you to everyone who joined us at St Georges Church in Kemptown, all you soup dragons made this event truly special.

From the faces we know well, delivering their tantalising soups and serving everyone with a smile, to those who were out for a different kind of Friday night, bringing friends and work colleagues.  To the couples, the families and even the odd first date…thank you for coming and playing a vital part in your community through supporting these amazing projects.

Pitches galore!

We had a mix of pitches on the evening with the ultimate winner being Sam Hart from Sussex 2016-04-29-214045-#997-CDAPrisoners’ Families. The win allows them to train more volunteers to offer independent advice and support to the children and families of those facing prison. We were delighted to be able to hand over a very large ceremonial cheque for £893.00! This amount was achieved through all the ticket donations paid in advance and taken at the door on the night, and the  wonderful Ahmed from Papa John’s Pizza Brighton who kindly matched it to double the pot!

Every pitch was impassioned and delivered eloquently making the decision for everyone on the night particularly challenging.  First Dan, from Goodmoney CIC , a Brighton based social enterprise that provides alternative ways of exchanging value within the community, wanted 2016-04-29-185203-#823-CDA #editedsupport to develop a voucher wallet that would be sent with every voucher bought. Nick, from St. John’s School & College, who provide education, care and medical therapy to young people aged 7 to 25, wanted help to run the first Glastonbury-style festival for all of their pupils. And Lucy from Rhythmix, a music and social welfare charity providing opportunities for music making to people in challenging circumstances, who desperately need new computer equipment.

2016-04-29-212939-#963-CDA#editedThere was a welcome return from Simon Cobb from Stoneham Bakehouse who won £352.50 at our last event to help purchase a really rather beautiful Elephant Bike to help share the benefits of baking as therapy for the community.  Simon and his team were also featured on BBC South East Today last  Friday talking about how baking can help commnuities. Follow them for details of their next baking session……and GET INVOLVED!

For those of you who don’t know Dr David Bramwell, we were lucky enough to be taken, if only for a short while, on an entertaining and engaging tour of his journey to some of the most extraordinary communities across the world. Peppered with funny anecdotes and insights, David’s talk reminded us of the importance of connections through conversation and to the people in our community.

Thank you to our soup contributors! Once again 5 delicious soups catering for all tastes. Lizzie Batten brought a crowd favourite and was once again found in the kitchen helping out. And although BrightonSoup stalwarts Tom Chadd and Ash Sharma  couldn’t make it, they sent their deliciousness along for us to enjoy.

Newcomer, Matteo  Watkins, enjoyed our last event so much he came back and made soup for us, and what a soup it was!

Sam Redfern returned with another lovely soup, but this time also offered himself up as a raffle prize – cooking a meal for 4 at the winners home – including wine! Here he is with the lucky winner. Not sure who does the washing up though :).

Souperstar: Sam Redfern, Crime Fighting TV Food Chef….

Sam originally got in touch with us back in Sept last year offering to make us soup, but our event dates kept clashing. Finally the stars lines up and he was able to join us at our last event at Community Base in February – and he brought along a delicious Tuscan Bean Soup that was very popular. Currently volunteering for The Real Junk Food Project Brighton and raising his lovely daughter, we wanted to know more about the mysterious crime analyst/TV food chef…

2016-02-19-204407-#TwitterLike many of our chefs, you moved to Brighton relatively recently.

I moved here with my wife and daughter 3 years ago from Cheltenham. Before that we were in London for 16 years. Who wouldn’t move here? For someone who loves food and drink, Brighton is phenomenal with so many restaurants to choose from. I’ll eat anything but mustard, gin or coffee.  

Mustard I get, but gin and coffee? When you say you will eat anything….?

I’ve eaten but maybe not enjoyed scorpions and crickets.

Uh, nice. So, how did you get into cooking?

My mum taught me to cook when I was younger and though I’m not professionally trained,  I started out working in Terence Conrans’ delicatessen in London and the ethos there was to be proficient in every aspect of the deli, which included food preparation. My career took a big shift into working as a crime analyst in London for nearly 10 years but food has always been my main love. When we moved to Cheltenham, I had more time to focus on food, setting up pop food events.

I heard a rumour you had a foray into TV? Tell me more…..

Working in Conrans’ deli fired up my love for food and I started experimenting with recipes and I think it gave me the confidence to apply for MasterChef. I was on MasterChef in 1999 when Lloyd Grossman presented the show. It was a great experience and 12573125_10154009669375466_8581972428587102627_na very different format to how it is now. I must have caught the competition bug because I put my trifle on Britain’s Best Dish a few years later! Co-incidentally, there was a film production company opposite the deli I worked at and they asked me to play ‘Sam the Grocer’ on a kids TV cookery program called Food Factory.

Crime, food and showbiz – brilliant! How did you get involved with Brighton Soup?

I started volunteering with the The Real Junk Food Project Brighton a while ago, and we linked up through food community projects and I also do other charity events. I do a pop up restaurant once a year to raise money for a brilliant charity called Winston’s Wish, the charity for bereaved children

Just like Brighton Soup, food, family and community seem to be a central theme in your life.

When my daughter was born, I made a book from all of the recipes I’d collected over the years and which are important to me and I’ve often returned to them for inspiration.  It was this sense of community and family that really struck a chord with me when I came to the event in February. It’s really family orientated and warm and actually quite emotional. It is about a community coming together with food, ready to listen to great ideas to make that community better.

Sam will be putting on another of his great pop up events in the near future and we’ll keep you posted so you can go along.

In the meantime, if you want to taste what Sam’s cooking up for our next event then join us @ The Crypt on the 29th April. And if that isn’t enough of a contribution he’s also put in a fantastic prize for our raffle. Sam will come to your house with a bottle of wine and cook dinner for 4 people – and you get to choose the style (French, Italian, Mexican, etc). Raffle tickets are a £1. 🙂

Souperstar: Tom Chadd from The Soup Dept

Tom is the first chef we reached out to when starting BrightonSoup and he has been stalwart supporter ever since, delighting us with his inventive and delicious soups. We chatted to the multi-talented Tom to find out more about what inspires him and why he got involved.

Tom, from that accent, I take it you aren’t Brighton born and bred…?  

Far from it!  I’m originally from Sunderland in the North East but I’ve not lived there for over 12 years, at first moving to Sheffield for University. I think the accent has softened a bit though.

Actually, I trained as a civil engineer and worked for a few years in that field before deciding to try my hand at something else so I headed out to the French Alps. I sort of fell into cooking by accident, working in kitchens and chalets, picking up skills over the winter seasons and undertaking intensive cookery classes. People seemed to like the food I was making and I was really enjoying, so I kept going. I worked in the Italian Dolomites, then moving to the Peak District where I catered for large groups and weddings. 

There’s a bit of a mountain theme there. Brighton doesn’t have mountains, so why have you ended up here?

I’ve got a few friends who live here and I’ve been visiting for some time.  There’s a great music scene and there is always something interesting going on so I decided to stay. I think that happens a lot here.

You have a brilliant mobile soup stall, The Soup Dept, which has just moved to a new spot in Dorset Place, Brighton – why do you love soup so much? 2016-02-19-142315-#Peter

Soup has endless possibilities and variations; it’s healthy and nutritious and works really well as street food. I’ve always loved making soups and it allows me to be creative on a daily basis.  Who doesn’t like soup? Since starting up two years ago, Soup Dept. has become really popular with the local community.

Tell me about your customers…

I’m really lucky. Most of my customers are regulars from the art college or offices nearby and I’ve got to know a lot of them since setting up. Being part of the community is really important to me as an independent, and I want to have a positive impact locally.  I think soup and talking about soup connects people in some way. My customers even suggest recipes and ideas which I love!

Everywhere! The meals that I eat, anything that has nice combinations of flavours.  I have a back catalogue but I keep I keep mixing it up, serving different soups each day, which are all freshly made inside the soup van, along with fresh bread rolls and organic coffees.

You offer a 50p discount for customers who bring their own cup? That’s brilliant!

Sustainability is a high priority at The Soup Dept.  All disposables are compostable and customers are encouraged to help the environment further by bringing their own cup and I like to reward that!  Local and organic ingredients are regularly used and food wastage is reduced to be as close to zero as possible. Any leftover bread rolls I deliver to the local food bank. 

What’s on the menu today (it smells DIVINE!) and can I have some?? 

We have two today, so you can try both. We have Thai Curried lentil and Cauliflower and Stilton.

Delicious. So what do you do when not making soup? 

Music is my other passion. I’m either watching live bands or playing keyboards with The Willing Gales, a Brighton 8 piece band, Seadog or Laish, a London band with a new album coming out soon.  

Why did you decide to get involved with Brighton Soup?

BSoup-Sponsor-Bowl-The-Soup-DeptIt is an incredible initiative and focuses on having a positive effect on the local community. Who wouldn’t support it?  The ideas pitched are inspiring, the format is fun and it is an entertaining evening. Not only that, I’ve met some fascinating people.

Photos, Junk Food & Little Green Pigs

It is World Book Day so it is fitting that today’s guest on Under the Influence with Mike Willis is Julie Watson from Little Green Pig. A charity that believes all young people can be writers. Julie pitched at BrightonSoup back in November and although she didn’t win she had lots of interest so she has some great things to say about the experience. To find out more, and to hear what Little Green Pig have been up to since the event tune in to 1BrightonFM at 1pm today. Hopefully there won’t be any acapella Queen. 🙂 No promises though.

We want to thank Sarah and all at The Real Junk Food Project for the veg donation which ended up in Tom’s Spicy Parsnip & Swede Soup – which was very popular. If you don’t know, TRJFP help eradicate food wastage by feeding it to people on a “pay as you feel” basis. Sam Redfern, one SCAN-20160303of their volunteer chefs who cooked a delicious Tuscan Bean Soup for our event said cooking at TRJFP was like “Ready, Steady, Cook”. What a great way to take what would be wasted and put it to delicious use.

You probably know TRJFP host a popup event at One Church in Gloucester place at 1pm every Friday, but did you know they host several events across Brighton & Hove?

Elephant to deliver Bread & Wellbeing

Friday night was Soup night – our 4th – and a really great night it was too. We sold out again and the room was full of familiar faces and lots of new ones too. It was a family event with kids, balloons and Lego all coming together. It was great to see kids asking questions during the pitch Q&A and then voting. The feedback we received was lovely and we’re all very grateful for your support. We’ll share the best feedback at some point.

If you haven’t heard, the winner was Simon Cobb from Stoneham Bakehouse. He won £352.20 to purchase an Elephant Bike to make it easier for Simon and his team to deliver breadmaking and wellbeing across the city.

It wasn’t an easy choice for our guests, as we were treated to 4 pitches from some passionate people with compelling ideas. Amy wanted help for her Chomp Lunch Club to feed hungry kids during school holidays; Carol and Diane from HeartVenture wanted to raise awareness for young disabled LBGT adults at Pride; Kat wants to start a structured Lego group – BLAST – for socially isolated autistic adults. I think we all struggled with who to vote for! Once again we heard people saying they had voted for one and were volunteering for another. You can see details on all the projects here and you’ll be hearing more from them in future posts.

We were also pleased to hear from not one, but TWO previous BrightonSoup winners! Tamsin Williams started Wide Berth to enable mums to have time to be free and honest about motherhood and mental health whilst engaging craft activities. She pitched @ Hangleton back in Sept to raise funds for a ‘taster day’ to engage mums teaching crafts to other mums. She came back to tell us how it was going and that her Make and Meet Craft Afternoon is being held at the Honeycroft Centre in Hove on March 11th. Check it out yourself or pass it along.

We also heard from Ruth Mason who gave us an update on the RISE Up Singing Choir. She pitched @ Community Base back in November and explained how without the funding the choir would have ended in December. Instead, they’re still going strong and performing on International Women’s Day at the Duke Box Theatre in Hove on March 8th. Well worth a listen.

As we’re on singing, while the votes were being counted the fabulous Mike Willis entertained everyone with his guitar and smooth Southern charm. He played some great original songs and was also very funny, especially doing the raffle. If you missed it (or just want to hear him sing again) you can find his previous recordings on iTunes Store. As a treat he has released his latest album – Pendulum Groove: A Revelation of the Heart – on Soundcloud for you to listen to and download. We heartily recommend it. You can also hear Mike every other Thursday afternoon on 1BrightonFM playing music and chatting.

bsoup tuscan beanOf course what would BrightonSoup be without the all-important soup? Five delicious varieties were served up along with various breads and cakes that our guests kindly brought along.

Once again Tom Chadd gave us a couple of his tasty soups even though he couldn’t join us (he was playing keyboards down at the Dome with his band the Willing Gales). Lizzie Batten was here again treating us to a gorgeous meaty broth. We also had a couple of newcomers: Sam Redfern and Dina Paiva cooking for us. We’ll be posting up bio’s on them soon, but you can see what they cooked for us here.

Once again we were treated by the lovely Ahmed from Papa John’s Pizza to some large and tasty pizzas. He only came to enjoy the evening, but couldn’t resist joining in. 🙂

As always though, it’s not just about the money. There’s was such a great atmosphere of community spirit in the room at BrightonSoup and lots of people offered to help out the projects in lots of ways. Whether that be money, resources or time it is all very much needed and very much welcomed – so please do check back to see if you can get involved in any way.

Well first off, less than 2 weeks until our next soup and over half the tickets are gone. So if you’re planning on joining us best get a ticket (PayPal) soon as we had to turn people away last time. If you prefer to use a debit/credit card you can pay via EventBrite but the fees are higher.

We now have our 4 projects selected for the 19th and it was not an easy task – and it’s not going to be any easier on the night. They’ll be doing some pitch training this morning courtesy of Brighton Students Union Community Organisers (thanks again :)). That should make their projects even more compelling.

We have a couple of new chefs this time offering up their delights for you. Sam Redfern, from The Real Junk Food Project Brighton has wanted to help for a while, but the dates clashed. This time the stars are aligned and he will be bringing some tasty soup on the night. And Aldina Paiva – who you may already know from the Street Diner or her restaurant in York Place, Dina’s Kitchen.  Sadly she can’t be there as she will be busy cooking, but she will be sending some Portuguese deliciousness along for us all to try. And don’t worry though, your fave regulars, Tom Chadd – of The Soup Dept fame – and Lizzie Batten are cooking for us again too.

We had the first guest on our community radio show with Mike Willis last week. Susannah from Adventure Unlimited, who pitched at our 2nd event, dropped in to talk about how outdoor activities can help kids develop confidence and self-esteem – and how AU helps under-privileged children access that. She also spoke about what it’s like to pitch at BrightonSoup. Susannah was a great guest and we’re very glad she dropped in to chat (Thanks! :)).

And Mike then turned the tables on our own Nikki when, without warning, he got her to interview him! She was very calm and did a great job, but she did mention later that it was very scary. It was also very entertaining, well done Nikki and thanks for a great show, Mike.

We’ll let you all know when the show is posted up in case want to hear it for yourselves. In the meantime we have some other great guests coming up on the show.

Now that was 2015

Happy New Year everyone!

2015 was a great year for BrightonSoup, our very first, so we thought we’d share our calendar year in numbers:

  • We held 3 Soups in 3 venues in Portslade, Hangleton and central Brighton.
  • We donations from 4 supermarkets and a staggering amount of raffle contributions from local business.
  • 5 local chefs prepared a selection of 15 delicious soups, 13 of them were vegan – the soups 🙂 – and all were gluten free. We also had 5 very large pizzas and lashings of other yummy stuff that people brought along, for too much to actually count.
  • 5 talented musicians entertained us with original music, traditional folk songs and some great Beatles covers – using guitars, a double bass, a flute and a lovely accordion.
  • We had 13 people pitch 11 projects and ultimately 3 winners who received a £1,308.80 from the tickets paid by the 213 attendees and 1 prize matching donation from an awesome local business.

It was a great year for us and we ended it with a listening to one of the winning projects singing beautiful forgotten Christmas carols at St Bartholomew’s Church in Brighton.

So now we look forward to 2016 and there’s lots to look forward to. Our next soup is going to be at community base on Friday 19th February. But first we have a couple of other events that may be on interest:

Mothers Uncovered pitched at our last event and though they didn’t win they had a lot of love for their SoulFood project. Well on Tue 19th Jan they’re holding a SoulFood Party at the Synergy Centre, Brighton to celebrate all things tasty. It looks to be a lot of fun.

Funding is a big issue for community projects, especially small ones – it’s why we exist. We’ve had a lot of help from people and one of them, Caz o’Kane, is holding a workshop on funding applications advice in central Brighton on Wed 13th Jan. She could be just the help you need.

So, here’s hoping to a great 2016 all round, with lots more souping and fun and people getting together to make good things happen!

Yay, oops, sorry and many, many thanks!

Well firstly, a big yay, for another great soup night!  Friday’s event at Community Base was our biggest yet and we sold out our remaining tickets in no time. We heard 4 passionate pitches for deserving community projects: soul food for parents, access to a community farm for people to learn about producing food, helping young people tell their stories through writing, and emotional healing through singing. 2015-11-20-211020-#9507-SRC-CDA #EDITEDWe ate delicious food, heard talented musicians strut their stuff, met some lovely people and voted for the project we wanted our ticket donations to go to. It was a tough call as they were all deserving projects, but the winner was Ruth Mason with her RISE Up Singing choir project.

So many things went right on the night and there’s a lot to be thankful for. But before we say thanks, we need to say oops and sorry. In the excitement on the night we miscalculated the total raised. On the night we thought we raised £287.50 in door money, but when we checked our figures later we realised we actually raised £351.50! And because of a matched funding offer, Ruth will actually get £703.60 for her project (and not the amount stated on the huge, symbolic, and now inaccurate cheque she took home with her on the night).

Which brings us to our first big thanks. And that’s to Ahmed El Dessouki of Papa John’s Pizza in Brighton. When he heard about what BrightonSoup were doing Ahmed offered to match the money raised! Not just the door money raised for the winning project, but also raffle and donations we raise for BrightonSoup itself. And if that wasn’t enough he arranged for delivery of 5 very large, tasty pizzas to go with our delicious soups. And the did :_

All told, Papa John’s donated pennies shy of £500 + pizzas. How fantastic is that, for the winning project, and for BrightonSoup. We kept these details secret until the event and the surprise in the room when we made the announcement was great. It’s a shame Ahmed and his family couldn’t be there to enjoy it, but we’re hoping they can come next time and meet Ruth when she comes back to tell us all how her project is going.

Apologies out of the way, we can focus on other things that went right, which I’m glad to say was pretty much everything else. In no small part because of the people that helped us make this event one of the best we’ve had! Thanks, as ever to the designated chefs: Tom, Ash, Lizzie and Soreh. We get our name from what they bring to the party, but it’s the quality and deliciousness of what they do that makes it work.

And thanks also to the talented musicians from Carnivalé. A couple of original tracks, some Beatles covers and a liberal dose of their undeniable musical talent, Tom and Jim entertained delightfuly. They took all our minds off the votes being counted. We can’t wait until their debut album gets released2015-11-20-205620-#9461-SRC-CDA #EDITED.

And all of this magic took place in the splendid 5th floor conference room at Community Base in central Brighton. Thanks to Alison and Olivia for inviting us to use their space. The money we saved went on a couple of soup kettles so we can now host events in community centres without proper kitchen faclities.

Finally, though, the biggest thanks goes to all of you that came along. It’s your money that goes to these projects and it’s your vote that decides where in our community we invest it. Without you all of you this wouldn’t be possible. So give yourselves a pat on the back – or applause if you feel so inclined :). Well done you!
