One more sleep…

With one more sleep before our big BrightonSoup event at Community Base, there was a hive of activity here at Soup HQ! And we’re all very tired. Posters, signs, badges, flowers, bowls, spoons, it’s all ready to go now.

Across Brighton our contributors are no doubt doing their own stuff. Chefs are preparing their soups (with several gluten free and vegan choices). Pitchers are practising their pitches with last minute tweaks, And the musicians are, we can only assume, harmonising. 🙂

All in preparation for what’s looking to be our biggest turnout yet. We still have tickets left, but not many. They’re available online until midday tomorrow and any remaining after that will be on the door in the evening. If you haven’t done so already and you don’t want to risk missing out, then book your ticket.

If you’re worried about parking, don’t be. There’s an NCP car park right by the venue and it’s only £4 for the night after 5pm. So it looks like the only thing left to worry about is bracing yourself for a fun evening tomorrow.

Doors open 6pm, pitches start 7pm.

Team Soup

BrightonSoup @ Hangleton – 18th Sept 2015

Our second BrightonSoup event and this time no noisy dance class above – and we had a much better PA system. Sadly one of our projects had to drop out late so there were 3 projects pitched on the night. Tamsin from Wide Berth won the vote and £300.70 in ticket money and donations for her craft taster classes for socially isolated mothers.

There were plenty of connections made and skills pledged to the projects so we hope they all get the support they need. We also had last soup’s winner, Ann from the Purple People Plot come back with an update on their project and how the money has helped. We’ll keep you updated on all these projects and let you know when they’re having events of their own.

The Projects

Thank you to all the projects for being part of our BrightonSoup event, it was the reason people attended (and maybe the soup).

These were 3 projects that pitched. Although only one was the winner, they all need your support. If you can help in any way please get in touch with them directly or use our contact form.

1 – Portslade Bonfire Society

Portslade Bonfire Society is a local group of residents keen to celebrate bonfire night with an annual torch lit procession through the Old Village and surrounding area finishing at emmaus Brighton – a national charity providing a supportive environment for homeless people. Emmaus hold an annual fireworks display and we plan to light their bonfire with the torches from our procession – and then enjoy the fireworks. This can be a great way of taking part in a local community event that is open to all. It’s a big responsibility and an empowering experience for youngsters to carry a lit torch through their home community. One we believe would be positive and memorable giving locals a sense of ownership in their own communities.

We have been invited to join Sussex Bonfire Council, organisers of the Lewes Bonfire Celebrations as well as supporting thirty other Bonfire Societies in Sussex. Any future fund-raising by Portslade Bonfire Society will be donated to the emmaus Brighton. To meet Brighton & Hove Council requirements we need funding for public liability insurance, and this is where any funding from BrightonSoup will be spent.

2 – Wide Berth (Winner)

Wide Berth is a project that enables mums to have time to be free and honest about motherhood and mental health whilst
engaging in an activity, such as making mosaics. Set up by Tamsin Williams, we aim to counteract social isolation for mums and develop a community of support for families in Hove.

Wide Berth is run by a committee with different interests and skills, and an empathy for mums suffering from Post natal depression.

We currently need to raise funds to keep the project running. Funding from BrightonSoup will cover the cost of hiring a hall for a ‘taster day’ to promote Wide Berth with various mini workshops offering different art and craft activities run by mums themselves. It will pay for promotion of the day with posters and leaflets, and serve the purpose of raising awareness of

3 – Wild Things & High Jinks

“My daughter is disabled and suffers with anxiety, ADD, and is partially deaf. I wanted an activity where she could achieve something on her own and climbing has been one of those achievements. The staff at Adventure Unlimited were absolutely fantastic with her – kind, patient and extremely understanding. Their dedication paid off and eventually she climbed the wall and reached the top – the look on her face was priceless!  It’s so important for her to achieve things in life as so many things are difficult for her, but one little step like reaching the top of that wall in life for her is like climbing a mountain.” This is what one mum told us about her child’s experience at our climbing club.

For 38 years, Adventure Unlimited have helped transform the lives of children and young people this way. Providing subsidised places and additional support for those that need it to take part and we have worked with literally thousands of young people. Now, is a tough time for small charities and we need your help to carry on providing our services and bring back our term-time climbing and archery clubs and outdoor adventure holiday clubs in the Autumn. Without your help, there’s a real risk that the memories created this year could be the last.

Everyone that helped

Soup & Food

These souper-stars provided 5 delicious soups, free of charge, to all of our guests (4 vegan and all gluten free). Tom couldn’t join us this time, but he still provided a couple of soups. Ash again provided a spicy soup. We also had a couple of newcomers, Lizzie and Paul, supplying soups – and they spent the evening in the kitchen helping our Peter feed the masses and washing up.

Thank you Mandy and Jill for coming in to help with the washing up.

DSCF8857The musical entertainment this time was provided by guitar duo, Dare To Be Charlie. Newcomers to Brighton, Daren and Charlie impressed with their eclectic mix of original songs, super harmonies and good humour. They got a great response from our soupers.

Not only did they entertain, but they let us use their PA for the pitches. Thanks!

The Volunteers

The Community Organisers, Dot and Sam, for giving our presenters “pitch” training. They really enjoyed it and felt far more confident of their presentations. They all did well on the night.

Ladles at the ready!

Well the 3 Chefs are getting their ladles out and preparing for the deliciousness that is BrightonSoup. And yes, there will be vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices available. The problem will be deciding which ones to eat. Good thing we’re not voting on the soups…

If you’re bringing food to share then bread, cakes and biscuits are faves. They go great with soup and don’t need to be refrigerated. There’s no alcohol served, but you’re welcome to bring your own.

4 Projects, awesome supporters and busy volunteers

Well the 4 projects for our next Soup have been decided and choosing a favourite is not going to be easy. They are all different, but each is worth the win. So it’s too late now to submit a project for this event, but if you do send something in we will put it in the pot our next Soup.

As last time, all ticket money goes to the winning project and we fund the event ourselves. The food is supplied free by our supporters. Tom at The Soup Dept and Ash & Shona from The Cactus Cafe are returning with more delicious soups. We also have a new Chef, Lizzie, contributing and trust us you won’t be disappointed. And Hilary & Richard are once again supplying some allotment veg for the soups. It (almost) goes without saying that there will be Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free choices.

A big thanks to Owen @ Tesco Hangleton and Peter @ Co-op Portland Rd for helping out. And the local businesses around The Grenadier and Portland Road have been fantastic with contributions for our raffle. We have nights out, meals, tea & cakes and places to take the kids. Something for those that want to look good, And of course, something for those that like a drink. Great prizes for you and we hope to cover our costs. And let’s not forget the free musical entertainment from the very talented acoustic duo Dare To Be Charlie.

Our supporters are awesome and we couldn’t do it without them, but lets not forget our volunteers. Visiting businesses, community centres, handing out leaflets, amassing soup bowls, spoons, making calls, emails, wrestling with excel and dropbox and drinking lots of coffee at Intenso (okay, probably be doing that last one anyway). They will all be very busy on the night. They don’t get paid and they even have to buy a ticket. Yep, we all do. But it’s so worth it.

It looks to be another fun night, hope you can make it.

Who’s ready for more soup?

Well, we’ve taken a nice long break in (mostly) glorious weather. And now we’re back and ready for some more soup. Who wants to join us?

We’ll be at St Richard’s Community Centre in Hangleton on Friday 19th Sept. We’re busy now getting the chefs, musicians and sponsors sorted (we’ve already got some great donations), but we’ll keep you informed as we go.

We’ve also started meeting the projects sent in so far and we don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The submission deadline isn’t until 31st August 2015 so there’s still time if you have a project in mind – just tell us what it is.

Lots to do yet.
