BrightonSoup @ St Richard’s – Friday 22nd March 2019

For our 17th BrightonSoup event, we returned to St Richard’s Community Centre, where we held our second soup, back in September 2015.

The Projects & Pitchers

A huge thanks to all the pitchers taking part on the night, we couldn’t do it without you!

Matthew Moors and Jo pitched and won £446 in donations for thei their D-Mob  – Dementia Peer Support Group, helping those living with dementia to be heard, remain active and feel mutually supported.

Previoius winner Boudicca Pepper came back to give an update on the AudioActive project. Back in July 2018 she – along with Isha and Tom from Audio Active – won £448.00 for their Young Women Tech Group Project. Boudicca told us about how the projects has grown since then.

1 – Vertigirls

Vertigirls is a non profit community group run by volunteers, established in 2008 to help empower women with additional needs through the sport of rock climbing. 

We run low cost indoor climbing courses. For progression we have weekly sessions at local indoor walls. We have 4-6 subsidised outdoor climbing trips throughout the summer.

We need some new safety equipment to use and loan to our participants or there is no climbing. We need climbing harnesses, climbing ropes and technical gear needed to set up climbs. Harnesses are generally £40-60 We need 4 so max £240
Ropes are generally £40-60 We need 2 so max £120. The technical equipment we need for set up will be about £200. For those that understand climbing jargon we need a full rack, carabiners, slings, belay devices and rope protectors We are working on a deal with DMM to get these things at cost price.

2 – D-Mob  – Dementia Peer Support Group (Winner)

D-Mob is a local dementia peer support group formed in early 2018. Members come from all walks of life, some living with dementia others supporting people living with dementia.

It is estimated there are approximately 3000 people living with dementia in the city projected to be 3500 by 2030.

Currently the Alzheimer’s peer support group only provides a group for one year after diagnosis. D-Mob plugs this gap!

Through monthly social gatherings D-Mob provides invaluable opportunity for the voice of people living with dementia to be heard, for people to  remain active and to feel mutually supported.

3 –  CravenVale Honey Collective

An environmental, educational and community project to get the local residents buzzing! The idea is to introduce two Bee Hives into the residential area of CravenVale (North Kemptown). CravenVale is a housing estate with a mix of private and council housing. It has a dense population and good community hub in the heart of it that runs various activities, cafe and a Friday food bank.

The aim is to train community volunteer beekeepers to look after the bees. While a long side run an educational community study group for self directed learning, inviting in local experts to speak and share
their knowledge. To plant and maintain bee friendly plants and herbs all around the estate.
There is the opportunity for competitions and participations from local schools and business. The idea is to eventually have CravenVale honey produced in the ‘Vale’ along with Beeswax candles and bowls.

This project would benefit the whole community as it has something to offer all ages. From training up young-old beekeepers to educational workshops for children and a study group for adults. It will hopefully bring the community together and integrate all ages in the fascination of our new residents. It also aims to encourage outdoor activity whilst checking on the bees and planting/maintaining the plants, flowers and herbs. It would bring a buzz to our community especially once the honey arrives and there is the opportunity to taste, sell and enter competitions.

The funding would go towards Beekeeping training for two volunteers, the Beehive’s, Beekeeping suits for adults and children. It would also help to secure a safe place to facilitate
the educational groups and workshops. The funding could be put towards the plants and flowers needed to create a bee friendly environment.

We have the local Council behind the idea and hopefully will work alongside the Worthing Honey Collective who already have established hives all around worthing and are keen to
share their knowledge and point us in the right direction.

4 – Tandem Rides 4 Health

This pilot project aims to improve wellbeing through getting people who are not active out on tandem bike rides along Brighton seafront. 

Each person will be offered a number of rides on safe cycle paths with a volunteer tandem lead rider.  It is hoped that the outdoor activity and company will lead to wellbeing benefits and we will ask for feedback at the start, mid and end points.

If successful, we will seek additional funding. The bikes are being supplied by Brighton Beach Bikes.

A massive thank you to Boudicca Pepper, Miri, Nina & Ellie for entertaining us on the evening with a superb set of originals tracks. The first time a previous winner has returned to perform. They had such a wearm response and promised to return.

These souper stars provided a delicious menu of 5 tasty soups to all of our guests – vegetarian, vegan, gluten free – something for everyone.


A big thanks to Jim Gray for once again bringing along some of his delicious freshly made bread! And to everyone else that brought food to share.


Decorations, Donations & Raffle Prizes

These are the local people and businesses (and some national) that supported us with some amazing raffle prizes. These contributions often cover the cost of hosting the event so that all the ticket income and donations can go to the winner.

We raised £243 so a HUGE thank you!

BrightonSoup @ Community Base – Friday 30th Nov 2018

1 – Brighton Bricks

Brighton Bricks is an adult fan of Lego group that holds regular events and smaller exhibitions.

In February 2019, they hope to put on a Lego Show at the Brighton Unitarian Church that will display the builds of members, as well as promoting the mental health benefits of the activity through their relationship with community groups.

2 – My Papercut Forest – The Arts & Crafts Project (Winner)

Our group meets every other Wednesday morning at The Bevy Pub to do arts & crafts together. Sometimes we bring experts to run classes, other times members of the group lead the classes. The classes are to help stimulate creativity, foster confidence, create friendships and address isolation.We used our first season of classes to explore different types of arts and crafts, one type in each session. This enabled our participants to find out which ones stimulated them the most.

It’s a community group which gets together and makes art and crafts, with an emphasis on enjoyment and togetherness not proficiency in arts and crafts. In doing this we have already helped people avoid isolation, helped people with their mental health problems, and helped people feel more confident in new or forgotten skills, whether that is on the arts and crafts or socialising side of things. We also have seen the satisfaction that comes from sharing knowledge and skills in the group. We include residents from all backgrounds and hopefully the participants will get a sense of belonging and make new friends.

3 –  My Brighton & Hove Photo Project

MY BRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project is a social enterprise run by volunteers. We provide opportunity for people affected by homelessness to share perspectives, building confidence through photography. In June we gave 100 single-use cameras to individuals with experience of homelessness, 13 photographs were chosen and turned in to a calendar. Our current mission is to sell the calendars (printing was funded by a crowdfunding appeal) and to continue creative opportunities for individuals with experience of homelessness in Brighton and Hove. All proceeds raised from calendar sales go back in to the project.

4 – Cross Over Brighton

Crossover Street Kitchen, a registered charity, is a food truck that serves a free hot breakfast for the rough sleeping and vulnerable community in Brighton and Hove.  We are the only hot breakfast service over the weekend for this community.  We have consistently worked on Morley St every Saturday and Sunday 52 weeks a year for nearly 5 straight years.   

Food is primarily sourced from Fareshare, with guests receiving a hot Bacon and Egg sandwich with occasional extras of grilled onions or mushrooms and sometimes cheese.  We have hot tea/coffee/hot chocolate and various cereals.  On top of that we aim to provide a savoury takeaway such as Higgidy pies or sausage roll and a sweet takeaway such as cake, yoghurt or chocolates.

Stefanie pitched for the Brighton Women’s Centre and won the vote receiving £383.30 in donations to get some replacement computers for they drop in suite.

1 – Brighton Women’s Centre (Winner)

At Brighton Women’s Centre we run two weekly peer support drop-in groups. Women from all backgrounds come to meet, get support, to reduce isolation and access essential resources. Our drop in groups are part of a package of wrap around support that BWC provides for women across Sussex.

For many of the women who use our services it is important to be able to access a computer, as they may have limited access to technology at home. We currently have two computers available for women to use, but they are old and prohibitively slow. With £500 we could afford to buy a high quality, fully equipped desktop PC.

A new computer would mean that volunteers and service users could work together to research information and support, without the constant frustration of IT problems and painfully slow connections. The money will help women in the local community who don’t have access to a computer or the internet, to access technology in a safe space, with the support of our volunteers.

2 – Turning The Tide ~ TREASURE

My wife Beccy and I have been working with children, young people and families for over 25 years. We set up our registered charity, ‘Turning the Tide’, 12 years ago. We work mainly in the Brighton and Hove area.

Our project called ‘TREASURE’, which we started in 2012, aims to build and strengthen community locally, through supporting young families, especially:

  • Those with children of primary school age
  • The vulnerable and the poor, including refugees
  • Single parents and their children
  • Those who never get to take a holiday

Often working with those in significant need, we aim to strengthen family relationships, build confidence and raise self-esteem by arranging ‘Weekends Away’ with appropriate activities in a rural family centre in West Sussex.

Between events we seek to provide pastoral support – the time we can give to these families is such a valuable commodity!

We took it to The Bridge

Wow, I think we had another great Soup. The run up is always nerve-wracking; will all the guests turn up, how much will we raise, will any of the projects drop out, will the entertainer make it, will we run out of soup? We always worry, but it always seems to turn out well. It must be down to the ingredients.  Firstly the passionate people who pitch great projects, to the wonderfully enthusiastic people volunteering, and then topped with the awesome warm and generous people who attend our events.

Like Matt Brabner, who persuaded his boss and colleagues at Natural Balances to dedicate their Bright10 run to  previous pitchers, Rhythmix. How great is that, and completely in the spirit of BrightonSoup. It’s always such a great crowd at our events, all wanting to be part of something bigger and to support each other. It was great to see that two thirds of you were attending your first Soup!

As usual it was really hard to decide on who to vote for. We had great impassioned pitches from Debbie for Cook and Creche, helping people eat healthy on a budget – with child care 2016-09-23-213025-088-sla-copyincluded; Xavier with republic, helping the hardest to reach young people learn a skill, gain confidence and get work – all through coffee; Duncan from Brighton Bike Hub about his DIY community workshop cycle repair project, where volunteers and users help each other. In the end it was Elaine from The Hummingbird Project – who plans to encourage local folk to foster unaccompanied children from the Calais refugee camps – who got the vote and takes £462 in door money and donations.

Julian from Free Uni Brighton, winner of our last event at Emmaus, came back to tell us how they’ve gotten on since then and how the money you gave them has helped them to continue giving free education for all regardless of your ability to pay. If you want to do some learning of your own, Forensic Crime or Latin maybe, then get in touch.

2016-09-23-210302-1279-wca-copyAs always we like you to be entertained with some musical genius, and we had the talented Harry Osborne performing some of his songs. Some deep, jazzy and some funky, I think we speak for everyone when we say it was superb. Thanks Harry!

We also met the guys from Middlesbrough Soup hope4boro! It’s always great to meet fellow Soupers and share our learning and experiences – we picked up some great suggestions. Obviously we we’re super busy on the night but it was good to have you there so thanks for coming, 2016-09-23-185125-026-sla-copyWe hope to be up your way soon. We visited Ely Soup a while back and we’re definitely keen to get out more and attend other soups. Soup Love!

And speaking of soup love, a big thanks to our awesome soup makers; we had another 5 tasty soups to try out. Tom from The Soup Dept couldn’t be there again, but gave us soup anyway. Lizzie and Sam came back again and we had a BrightonSoup newcomer Connie, who works at The Bridge Kitchen. All were souper amazing, so check out what deliciousness they made us here.

It was great he took the time to join us and had some very lovely heartfelt words to say at the end of the night. Supporting what we try to achieve at BrightonSoup and to all the projects and people that are involved. He’s already asked to be kept in the loop for our next events, so he can join us again. Is BrightonSoup addictive?

Next up we’re back at Community Base in central Brighton on the 2nd December, so save the date and more details will follow. But to finish up, we’d like to say again a big thank you to everyone involved. Without you all we wouldn’t be able to keep going.

BrightonSoup @ Community Base 20th Nov 2015

Our third BrightonSoup event, this time in the heart of Brighton.

Everyone that organised, volunteered, cooked, entertained, provided prizes, decorations, pitched, won and basically helped make it all happen is listed below:


Ruth Mason from RISE UK won the vote and £351.80 in ticket money and donations for her RISE Up Singing choir group. The big surprise of the night was that Ahmed El Dessouki,  owner of Papa John’s Pizza in Brighton matched the funding raised so that Ruth ended up with a whopping £703.60.

He also matched the £146 we raised for BrightonSoup. And if that wasn’t enough he arranged for 5 very large pizzas to be delivered for us all to enjoy with the soup. So a HUGE thanks to Ahmed and all at Papa John’s Pizza in Brighton.

1 – RISE UP Singing (Winner)

Project Logo - Rise 20th

RISE Provides support to women, families and LGBT people who have experienced domestic abuse and violence. RISE Up Singing is a choir of service users, staff and supporters who are singing together for the first time.

RISE Up Singing gives people back their voice, allowing space for physical and emotional healing. Support from Brighton Soup enables free engagement with the choir.

2 – Healey Home Farm

Project Logo - Heley Home FarmHealey Home Farm is a community project based at Stanmer Organics, Stanmer Park. Our project is creating a one acre farming space for people to come together and learn about producing food. Our main business is organic poultry farming, supplying eggs to small local businesses and community organisations who promote healthy eating and wherever possible use locally grown and organic produce.

We now need to make the farm more accessible for our customers and visitors. We will make a noticeboard by the farm gate providing information about the project, along with information points at each chicken and duck run and vegetable bed. This is because our visitors at the annual open day all enjoyed seeing the different breeds of hen, learning about the different coloured eggs that are laid and how to care for the animals.

This will enable us to have visitors and volunteers more frequently and plan for our first open event.

 3 – My Life Journalism

Project Logo - Little Green PigLittle Green Pig is running workshops to get young people to tell their stories through writing. 6 two hour sessions after school: 14 young people with an emphasis on recruitment from children in care will work with a professional journalist to write their own columns for publication weekly in Latest7 magazine. We will be recruiting through referrals from the Virtual Schools (Children in Care) team. Each workshop will be run by 2 workshop leaders, supported by 8-14 volunteers (as appropriate).

All our workshops include a celebratory event to share the project outcome with the community

 4 – SoulFood

Project-Logo---Mothers-UncoveredSoulFood is a new venture for Brighton-based Mothers Uncovered (part of Livestock charity). We will create a series workshops that aim to help Brighton based parents engage with food. They will both share their own food memories and experiences and experiment with new foods and cooking. These are not just classes in healthy eating/living because there are an abundance of these.

We want participants to feel empowered by their food choices, to expand their knowledge of the food resources available within the city and to feel confident in sharing their food skills and ideas within their communities. The money would go towards the cost of food for the workshops next year – that way we can offer the sessions at a very low rate of £3 per session (which includes resource materials & a meal). It also means that we can offer the session for free for any disabled participants.

These souper-stars provided 4 delicious soups, free of charge, to all of our guests (3 vegan and all gluten free). Tom, Ash & Shona couldn’t join us, but they still provided tasty soups for the evening. Lizzie again brought along her Clam Chowder soup and spent the evening working the kitchen with Peter and Judy. We also had previous attendee, Zorah Levy, returning, this time with a spicy Thai soup.

4 Projects, awesome supporters and busy volunteers

Well the 4 projects for our next Soup have been decided and choosing a favourite is not going to be easy. They are all different, but each is worth the win. So it’s too late now to submit a project for this event, but if you do send something in we will put it in the pot our next Soup.

As last time, all ticket money goes to the winning project and we fund the event ourselves. The food is supplied free by our supporters. Tom at The Soup Dept and Ash & Shona from The Cactus Cafe are returning with more delicious soups. We also have a new Chef, Lizzie, contributing and trust us you won’t be disappointed. And Hilary & Richard are once again supplying some allotment veg for the soups. It (almost) goes without saying that there will be Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free choices.

A big thanks to Owen @ Tesco Hangleton and Peter @ Co-op Portland Rd for helping out. And the local businesses around The Grenadier and Portland Road have been fantastic with contributions for our raffle. We have nights out, meals, tea & cakes and places to take the kids. Something for those that want to look good, And of course, something for those that like a drink. Great prizes for you and we hope to cover our costs. And let’s not forget the free musical entertainment from the very talented acoustic duo Dare To Be Charlie.

Our supporters are awesome and we couldn’t do it without them, but lets not forget our volunteers. Visiting businesses, community centres, handing out leaflets, amassing soup bowls, spoons, making calls, emails, wrestling with excel and dropbox and drinking lots of coffee at Intenso (okay, probably be doing that last one anyway). They will all be very busy on the night. They don’t get paid and they even have to buy a ticket. Yep, we all do. But it’s so worth it.

It looks to be another fun night, hope you can make it.

Timing is everything.

With under a month to go this seems like a good time to tell you how (we hope) the evening will go:

Doors open 6pm, or thereabouts, depending on just how good our preparation has been. We aim to kick off around 6:30 pm with a brief intro and then get straight into the pitchers and their projects. Each gets a few minutes to explain their project and we get to ask a few questions – 3/4 at most as we don’t want to slow things down. Once all the pitches are over, hopefully around 7:15 pm, it’s time for food!

A selection of very yummy soups, with vegetarian and gluten free options. We will also have contributions that people are bringing along – so far we have promises of lasagne, quiche, cheesy scones and bread. The voting will now be open so those with quick minds (or impulses) can place their vote. The rest of us can mull it over while we eat and chat about the projects. You can even talk to the pitchers as they’ll be milling around. There will also be info posted up about the projects, contributors and BrightonSoup.

Around 8:30 pm we’ll give you notice that the voting is about to close. Then our guest band will play a couple of tracks to keep you entertained whilst we close the vote and do the counting.

We hope to announce the winning project at 9pm. After that we we get back to more music and socialising until we have to close the soup party at 10pm. Then that it’s that sad time of clearing up, and yes, if you really, really want to stay behind and help, you can. 🙂
