BrightonSoup @ Community Base – Friday 30th Nov 2018

For our 16th BrightonSoup event, we returned to our spiritual home, Community Base, in the heart of Brighton.

1 – Brighton Bricks

Brighton Bricks is an adult fan of Lego group that holds regular events and smaller exhibitions.

In February 2019, they hope to put on a Lego Show at the Brighton Unitarian Church that will display the builds of members, as well as promoting the mental health benefits of the activity through their relationship with community groups.

2 – My Papercut Forest – The Arts & Crafts Project (Winner)

Our group meets every other Wednesday morning at The Bevy Pub to do arts & crafts together. Sometimes we bring experts to run classes, other times members of the group lead the classes. The classes are to help stimulate creativity, foster confidence, create friendships and address isolation.We used our first season of classes to explore different types of arts and crafts, one type in each session. This enabled our participants to find out which ones stimulated them the most.

It’s a community group which gets together and makes art and crafts, with an emphasis on enjoyment and togetherness not proficiency in arts and crafts. In doing this we have already helped people avoid isolation, helped people with their mental health problems, and helped people feel more confident in new or forgotten skills, whether that is on the arts and crafts or socialising side of things. We also have seen the satisfaction that comes from sharing knowledge and skills in the group. We include residents from all backgrounds and hopefully the participants will get a sense of belonging and make new friends.

3 –  My Brighton & Hove Photo Project

MY BRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project is a social enterprise run by volunteers. We provide opportunity for people affected by homelessness to share perspectives, building confidence through photography. In June we gave 100 single-use cameras to individuals with experience of homelessness, 13 photographs were chosen and turned in to a calendar. Our current mission is to sell the calendars (printing was funded by a crowdfunding appeal) and to continue creative opportunities for individuals with experience of homelessness in Brighton and Hove. All proceeds raised from calendar sales go back in to the project.

4 – Cross Over Brighton

Crossover Street Kitchen, a registered charity, is a food truck that serves a free hot breakfast for the rough sleeping and vulnerable community in Brighton and Hove.  We are the only hot breakfast service over the weekend for this community.  We have consistently worked on Morley St every Saturday and Sunday 52 weeks a year for nearly 5 straight years.   

Food is primarily sourced from Fareshare, with guests receiving a hot Bacon and Egg sandwich with occasional extras of grilled onions or mushrooms and sometimes cheese.  We have hot tea/coffee/hot chocolate and various cereals.  On top of that we aim to provide a savoury takeaway such as Higgidy pies or sausage roll and a sweet takeaway such as cake, yoghurt or chocolates.

Souperstar: Joanne Gray

Joanne has been involved with Brighton Soup since December 2016 (almost two years!) and regularly cooks up a delicious soup for our events. Ahead of our next Soup at  Community Base on the 30th November (tickets here!), we caught up with Joe to find out all about her cooking…

What are your favourite things to cook?

I love love love Indian food, so I tend to cook a lot of different Indian curries and street food – my husband recently bought me the most amazing cookbook called Fresh India by Meera Sodha. Its all vegetarian recipes that are super easy to make and all of them so far are delicious.  I basically like cooking food that I really enjoy eating, so that does usually involve recipes with a bit of a kick as I am a bit of a spice and chilli fan!  My most memorable and favourite soup for a Brighton Soup event was Joe’s Split Chickpea, Spinach & Masala Soup – as you’d expect, it was nice and spicy and seemed to go down well amongst those who tried it!

How did you first get interested in cooking? 

I’ve been cooking since I was young. My parents always encouraged my sisters and I to help make dinners, and my passion for food and cooking has continued throughout my life.  I actually remember ‘outsourcing’ my mincemeat pie making skills at Christmas when I was about 10…a friend of my mums didn’t have the time to make them herself so I baked them for her and she paid me nicely (probably only about £2 but it felt a lot back then!)

What has been your most complicated/ interesting cooking to date?

In terms of interesting dishes, I’d say making our own halloumi cheese from scratch and then cooking with it has to be up there.  Homemade halloumi is delicious, really light and airy and full of flavour – 100 x better than the shop bought stuff!  We made all sorts of recipes with it, including coating in breadcrumbs and having it with portobello mushrooms and spinach in a toasted brioche bun, with some sriracha mayo for a bit of a kick!  My ethos with cooking is that it doesn’t need to be overly complicated, using good fresh ingredients and trying out new recipes with them is what its all about for me!

How did you first get involved with Brighton Soup?

My sister lives in Folkestone and had been involved with Folkestone Soup, so when I happened to see an advert one day for Brighton Soup I decided to go along and find out what it was all about.  I absolutely loved the event, I think it is wonderful on so many levels, from encouraging the community to get together, to find out about the issues and opportunities in our community to of course helping so good causes with some financial support to help their sustainability.  So I decided to become a regular Soup go-er!  I think it was on my 2nd Soup event that I got chatting to one of the organisers and somehow managed to sign myself up to making soup!!  The rest is history, I now go regularly to Brighton Soup with my husband, daughter and parents – who all love it!  My Dad has now also become a regular bread maker!

Where are you from? Are there any delicacies/ regional dishes we should try?
I am originally from Scotland but grew up in the South of England. My Scottish roots still influence my soup making. My Gran made the best soup ever with barley, lentils and split peas being her favourite basis for her different soups – so I often adapt versions of my Gran’s old recipes.  My Gran also used to make a meal called ‘Beef Olives’ which is thinly cut steak filled with either sausages or haggis and slow cooked in a onion gravy. Its comfort food at it’s absolute best, served with mash and greens! My daughter loves it too, so it’s one that we’ll make on a winter’s Sunday!

Joe runs her own business consultancy called The Progress Lab  which specialises in organisational change, people development, sales and marketing. She is also a Pilates instructor and regularly hosts Women’s Well-Being events in Hove with a Nutritionist friend. She also runs a Lifelines Pilates class for those who are 50+ in Portslade.

1 – Sew & Grow in the Community

Sew and Grow in the Community would create a safe space for women to build confidence, strengthen community bonds and open up conversations around the impact of domestic abuse whilst learning valuable sewing skills. 43772994_2060560064006133_2472751163527659520_o

The first course is for women from the BME community who have expressed a desire to learn sewing skills as a way to save and make money.

2 – All Saints – Caritas (Winner)

Since 2013, Caritas has provided a monthly Sunday lunch for homeless and vulnerably housed people, and those who feel excluded or on the periphery of society. It is held at All Saints Church Hall. Much of the food cooked is donated by Fairshare- an organisation which redistributes supermarket food that is about to go out of date.

3 –  Market Beans – Coffee With A Social Purpose

Market Beans is a brand new social enterprise providing young people with a learning disability and/or autism with work skills and barista training to increase their employability. We will have fun with our trainees selling a range of high quality coffee at community events, festivals and in public spaces from a ‘coffee bike’, which we will cycle to the location, supplementing battery power with solar panels to minimise the environmental impact of the project.

4 – No Labels, No Limits, Just Me – Twice Dead #1

The creation and distribution of Book 1 of a 16 part comic series, that can be read by all (reading and non-reading abilities). The pictures as much as the dialogue will tell the story. The first comic will be given out at a local launch. Souperstar: Martin Pritchard of Chu Chu Burmese Kitchen

Just before our last Soup Event (@ St George’s Hangleton) we caught up with one of our talented chefs, Martin Pritchard, who once again provided deliciou soup from from his Chu Chu Burmese Kitchen.

Martin & Tara Pritchard first joined us as volunteers in early 2017. They came to help set up at our May event, and we were all blown away by their boundless energy! Since then, they’ve volunteered at other events, and Martin has become one of our favourite soup chefs. Today, we’ve met him at ‘The Food Rocks’ market in Horsham, where he has a pitch every Thursday and Saturday selling delicious Burmese food.

Martin, how did you and Tara meet?

I was on my travels in Hawaii, queuing at a youth hostel. Tara was in the queue too! We got talking, and then met again on a flight to the Cook Islands. It went from there! We travelled together in New Zealand, and then lived together in Sydney, Australia for 9 months. When we returned to the UK, we moved in together and eventually married in 2009. We lived for a while in Chessington (near the theme park) but both loved the sea and came to Brighton whenever we could. We eventually moved here, but with our jobs don’t get to the beach as often as we’d like!

How did you get interested in cooking?

I grew up in Cheltenham, where I learnt to be a meat-and-veg man with a particular passion for peas soaked in vinegar! Later on, I studied Tourism and Management at Brighton Uni, living mainly on burgers and potatoes in all their guises. Tara, on the other hand, had grown up all over the world, eating spicy food in countries like Malaysia when she was just a kid. I guess I had a sort of ultimatum: “If you want this relationship to move forward, you need to expand your eating habits!”

So what happened?

We had an Italian housemate called Gino when we lived in Sydney, and he showed me some simple Italian dishes that inspired me. I found a love of cooking and have been making up for lost time ever since. Having been employed as a Payroll Manager for 17 years, I realised it was not what I had set out to do and it was driving me crazy. I hated being office bound and needed to do something different so I set up my own food business. Tara’s father is Anglo Burmese, and we decided that as Burmese food isn’t really known in the UK we would like to try and change that. Tara still has a job that takes her all over the world, but we’d both like to be able to dedicate ourselves to this line of work.

The food is delicious! I just had a Dhal, which is quite like Indian or Nepali but also a bit different! And tea leaf salad?

Burmese Cuisine could be characterised by its use of fish (fish sauce and ngapi, which is shrimp paste) and drip shrimp, but it also takes influences from the countries it borders: Bangladesh, India, China, Thailand and Laos.

Many of the dishes we serve are traditional family recipes, the Oh No Khao Swe  (Chicken, Coconut & Egg Curry) is one of Tara’s Grandad’s recipes and one of the favourite things to eat in her family. “Chu Chu”, the name of the business, comes from the family name for the crispy egg noodles that are liberally sprinkled on the Oh No Khao Swe.

Laphet, or Tea Leaf Salad, is a ubiquitous Burmese dish. It is said that the Burmese are the only nationality to eat tea as well as drink it. The young tea leaves are picked and buried in sacks underground to ferment for anything between 6 months and 2 years. The tea leaves are then served over a salad of shredded veg (cabbage and lettuce), and served with numerous toppings such as crispy onion, crispy garlic, shrimp powder, mixed nuts and beans for the crunch that the Burmese love so much, along with the dressing of fish sauce, garlic oil and lime juice.

How did you get involved with Brighton Soup?

To be honest, Tara signed up for it initially. She was interested in what Brighton Soup do, and wanted to help out and try to make a difference to the community we live in, and I tagged along. I like what it stands for. There is a really nice environment at the events, and its great to be able to contribute to charities by doing what I do!

Martin can be found every Thursday and Saturday at the Food Rocks Market, Carfax, Horsham. If you love food, and particularly spicy food, then try this place out! Its just a bit different!

Pitchers, Chefs & Hickory Signals!

Well hey soupers, our Spring event is fast approaching!

It’s a busy time all round. The pitchers have been selected and are putting pen to paper, no doubt practising their delivery in a mirror. They think you’re a scary bunch, but we know that’s not true. The soup crowd gives one of the warmest welcomes ever! Still, public speaking can be very scary. Would you do it?

Our team of volunteer chefs have once again committed to feasting you on the night, an aromatic range of deliciousness will once again be available – in all the usual veggie and dietary variations.

We are souper delighted to announce that Folk duo, Hickory Signals, will be performing on the night. Strong vocal melodies with guitar, shruti, flute and a variety of percussion, layering sounds carefully and minimally to atmospheric effect – both traditional and original songs. Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti are a joy to listen to and we hope you enjoy it.

1 – Brighton Women’s Centre (Winner)

At Brighton Women’s Centre we run two weekly peer support drop-in groups. Women from all backgrounds come to meet, get support, to reduce isolation and access essential resources. Our drop in groups are part of a package of wrap around support that BWC provides for women across Sussex.

For many of the women who use our services it is important to be able to access a computer, as they may have limited access to technology at home. We currently have two computers available for women to use, but they are old and prohibitively slow. With £500 we could afford to buy a high quality, fully equipped desktop PC.

A new computer would mean that volunteers and service users could work together to research information and support, without the constant frustration of IT problems and painfully slow connections. The money will help women in the local community who don’t have access to a computer or the internet, to access technology in a safe space, with the support of our volunteers.

2 – Turning The Tide ~ TREASURE

My wife Beccy and I have been working with children, young people and families for over 25 years. We set up our registered charity, ‘Turning the Tide’, 12 years ago. We work mainly in the Brighton and Hove area.

Our project called ‘TREASURE’, which we started in 2012, aims to build and strengthen community locally, through supporting young families, especially:

  • Those with children of primary school age
  • The vulnerable and the poor, including refugees
  • Single parents and their children
  • Those who never get to take a holiday

Often working with those in significant need, we aim to strengthen family relationships, build confidence and raise self-esteem by arranging ‘Weekends Away’ with appropriate activities in a rural family centre in West Sussex.

Between events we seek to provide pastoral support – the time we can give to these families is such a valuable commodity!

View from the Galley Kitchen

If you’ve been to soup before, then you know the grub is delicious. You might even chatted with Peter, our boss of all things kitchen. We asked him about his view of our events:

I’m Peter (the kitchen) and I got caught by the press gang. Not for the first time! My last job started with a few beers followed by 2 months floating about in the North Sea. After 10 years of that kind of thing I managed to scrabble back to shore. Then I got involved with BrightonSoup. OK, at least this time “the gang” were my friends.

I’ve come to love Soup. It’s a great idea, and such a win-win. An amazing value night out, and great for the pitchers who get to interact with people who want to be involved with things that are going on in their neighbourhood. I mean, look at it like this. One can have a good time dancing, eating out, or going to the pictures. At Soup, you could hear something or meet someone that inspires you to do new things, explore new avenues. It could even change your life.

For me it has been a great opportunity to meet and work with new people. Lizzie is one of our talented chefs, who spends much of her life doing charitable work of one kind or another. She is a fantastic organizer and not only is she absolutely invaluable in the kitchen but also brings her artistic flair with her – that is why the bread and extras are often arranged so nicely, instead of just made into piles by a nerdy techie like me. She is an amazing cook (I’m lucky enough to have been for dinner) and makes our famous Clam Chowder.

Our chefs Tom and Sam also help out when they can make it – in the kitchen and serving people soup. Tom has made a business out of soup (The Soup Dept) and Sam has been on MasterChef. With people like these helping out it’s not surprising the soups are so good. We also hope the service is 🙂

And it is great meeting our customers too. At the first few events we used to line up bowls behind labels (I said I was a techie) because we were anxious about how long it would take to serve everyone. Then we did a venue where we were didn’t have space so we had to serve people individually. It didn’t take any longer and it was so much nicer to interact with our guests, have a quick chat while we’re serving, help them decide the soup etc. We’ve kept it that way ever since.

Being in the kitchen I often don’t get to pay much attention to the pitches on the night. It is the busiest time, making sure the soup is ready to serve as soon as they finish. But more often than not I get to meet them before the event, either to talk through the process or at pitch-training sessions. I always want them all to win. But even those who don’t often tell us they have got something invaluable, just from being there.

Soup has certainly changed me. Two years ago there would have been no way on Earth I’d have walked up the high street, gone into a shop and asked for something free for a raffle. Now I do that kind of thing. It has been amazing to meet people doing stuff in their community. Not just celebs on the telly, real people doing real stuff. And never before have I had the opportunity to wash up 100 soup bowls at 10-o-clock at night, that’s been just great too. OK, I could maybe ditch that one, but thankfully there’s been plenty of help!

I’ve always loved doing new things. Maybe that’s why I’m such a sucker for the press gang.

We took it to The Bridge

Wow, I think we had another great Soup. The run up is always nerve-wracking; will all the guests turn up, how much will we raise, will any of the projects drop out, will the entertainer make it, will we run out of soup? We always worry, but it always seems to turn out well. It must be down to the ingredients.  Firstly the passionate people who pitch great projects, to the wonderfully enthusiastic people volunteering, and then topped with the awesome warm and generous people who attend our events.

Like Matt Brabner, who persuaded his boss and colleagues at Natural Balances to dedicate their Bright10 run to  previous pitchers, Rhythmix. How great is that, and completely in the spirit of BrightonSoup. It’s always such a great crowd at our events, all wanting to be part of something bigger and to support each other. It was great to see that two thirds of you were attending your first Soup!

As usual it was really hard to decide on who to vote for. We had great impassioned pitches from Debbie for Cook and Creche, helping people eat healthy on a budget – with child care 2016-09-23-213025-088-sla-copyincluded; Xavier with republic, helping the hardest to reach young people learn a skill, gain confidence and get work – all through coffee; Duncan from Brighton Bike Hub about his DIY community workshop cycle repair project, where volunteers and users help each other. In the end it was Elaine from The Hummingbird Project – who plans to encourage local folk to foster unaccompanied children from the Calais refugee camps – who got the vote and takes £462 in door money and donations.

Julian from Free Uni Brighton, winner of our last event at Emmaus, came back to tell us how they’ve gotten on since then and how the money you gave them has helped them to continue giving free education for all regardless of your ability to pay. We also met the guys from Middlesbrough Soup hope4boro! It’s always great to meet fellow Soupers and share our learning and experiences – we picked up some great suggestions. Obviously we we’re super busy on the night but it was good to have you there so thanks for coming, 2016-09-23-185125-026-sla-copyWe hope to be up your way soon. We visited Ely Soup a while back and we’re definitely keen to get out more and attend other soups. Soup Love!

And speaking of soup love, a big thanks to our awesome soup makers; we had another 5 tasty soups to try out. Tom from The Soup Dept couldn’t be there again, but gave us soup anyway. Lizzie and Sam came back again and we had a BrightonSoup newcomer Connie, who works at The Bridge Kitchen. All were souper amazing, so check out what deliciousness they made us here.

A special mention has to go to Sam and her team at The Bridge – who invited us over, let us use their lovely space and and made us feel really, really welcome. And they gave us two delicious soups too. Thanks!

It was great he took the time to join us and had some very lovely heartfelt words to say at the end of the night. Supporting what we try to achieve at BrightonSoup and to all the projects and people that are involved. He’s already asked to be kept in the loop for our next events, so he can join us again. Is BrightonSoup addictive?

Next up we’re back at Community Base in central Brighton on the 2nd December, so save the date and more details will follow. But to finish up, we’d like to say again a big thank you to everyone involved. Without you all we wouldn’t be able to keep going.

St George & The Community Soup Dragons!

Friday night was BrightonSoup night and my oh my, last Friday was epic. Thank you to everyone who joined us at St Georges Church in Kemptown, all you soup dragons made this event truly special.

From the faces we know well, delivering their tantalising soups and serving everyone with a smile, to those who were out for a different kind of Friday night, bringing friends and work colleagues.  To the couples, the families and even the odd first date…thank you for coming and playing a vital part in your community through supporting these amazing projects.

Pitches galore!

We had a mix of pitches on the evening with the ultimate winner being Sam Hart from Sussex 2016-04-29-214045-#997-CDAPrisoners’ Families. The win allows them to train more volunteers to offer independent advice and support to the children and families of those facing prison. We were delighted to be able to hand over a very large ceremonial cheque for £893.00! This amount was achieved through all the ticket donations paid in advance and taken at the door on the night, and the  wonderful Ahmed from Papa John’s Pizza Brighton who kindly matched it to double the pot!

Every pitch was impassioned and delivered eloquently making the decision for everyone on the night particularly challenging.  First Dan, from Goodmoney CIC , a Brighton based social enterprise that provides alternative ways of exchanging value within the community, wanted 2016-04-29-185203-#823-CDA #editedsupport to develop a voucher wallet that would be sent with every voucher bought. Nick, from St. John’s School & College, who provide education, care and medical therapy to young people aged 7 to 25, wanted help to run the first Glastonbury-style festival for all of their pupils. And Lucy from Rhythmix, a music and social welfare charity providing opportunities for music making to people in challenging circumstances, who desperately need new computer equipment.

2016-04-29-212939-#963-CDA#editedThere was a welcome return from Simon Cobb from Stoneham Bakehouse who won £352.50 at our last event to help purchase a really rather beautiful Elephant Bike to help share the benefits of baking as therapy for the community.  Simon and his team were also featured on BBC South East Today last  Friday talking about how baking can help commnuities. Follow them for details of their next baking session……and GET INVOLVED!

For those of you who don’t know Dr David Bramwell, we were lucky enough to be taken, if only for a short while, on an entertaining and engaging tour of his journey to some of the most extraordinary communities across the world. Peppered with funny anecdotes and insights, David’s talk reminded us of the importance of connections through conversation and to the people in our community.

Thank you to our soup contributors! Once again 5 delicious soups catering for all tastes. Lizzie Batten brought a crowd favourite and was once again found in the kitchen helping out. And although BrightonSoup stalwarts Tom Chadd and Ash Sharma  couldn’t make it, they sent their deliciousness along for us to enjoy.

Newcomer, Matteo  Watkins, enjoyed our last event so much he came back and made soup for us, and what a soup it was!

Sam Redfern returned with another lovely soup, but this time also offered himself up as a raffle prize – cooking a meal for 4 at the winners home – including wine! Here he is with the lucky winner. Not sure who does the washing up though :).

Souperstar: Tom Chadd from The Soup Dept

Tom is the first chef we reached out to when starting BrightonSoup and he has been stalwart supporter ever since, delighting us with his inventive and delicious soups. We chatted to the multi-talented Tom to find out more about what inspires him and why he got involved.

Tom, from that accent, I take it you aren’t Brighton born and bred…?  

Far from it!  I’m originally from Sunderland in the North East but I’ve not lived there for over 12 years, at first moving to Sheffield for University. I think the accent has softened a bit though.

Actually, I trained as a civil engineer and worked for a few years in that field before deciding to try my hand at something else so I headed out to the French Alps. I sort of fell into cooking by accident, working in kitchens and chalets, picking up skills over the winter seasons and undertaking intensive cookery classes. People seemed to like the food I was making and I was really enjoying, so I kept going. I worked in the Italian Dolomites, then moving to the Peak District where I catered for large groups and weddings. 

There’s a bit of a mountain theme there. Brighton doesn’t have mountains, so why have you ended up here?

I’ve got a few friends who live here and I’ve been visiting for some time.  There’s a great music scene and there is always something interesting going on so I decided to stay. I think that happens a lot here.

You have a brilliant mobile soup stall, The Soup Dept, which has just moved to a new spot in Dorset Place, Brighton – why do you love soup so much? 2016-02-19-142315-#Peter

Soup has endless possibilities and variations; it’s healthy and nutritious and works really well as street food. I’ve always loved making soups and it allows me to be creative on a daily basis.  Who doesn’t like soup? Since starting up two years ago, Soup Dept. has become really popular with the local community.

Tell me about your customers…

I’m really lucky. Most of my customers are regulars from the art college or offices nearby and I’ve got to know a lot of them since setting up. Being part of the community is really important to me as an independent, and I want to have a positive impact locally.  I think soup and talking about soup connects people in some way. My customers even suggest recipes and ideas which I love!

Everywhere! The meals that I eat, anything that has nice combinations of flavours.  I have a back catalogue but I keep I keep mixing it up, serving different soups each day, which are all freshly made inside the soup van, along with fresh bread rolls and organic coffees.

You offer a 50p discount for customers who bring their own cup? That’s brilliant!

Sustainability is a high priority at The Soup Dept.  All disposables are compostable and customers are encouraged to help the environment further by bringing their own cup and I like to reward that!  Local and organic ingredients are regularly used and food wastage is reduced to be as close to zero as possible. Any leftover bread rolls I deliver to the local food bank. 

What’s on the menu today (it smells DIVINE!) and can I have some?? 

We have two today, so you can try both. We have Thai Curried lentil and Cauliflower and Stilton.

Delicious. So what do you do when not making soup? 

Music is my other passion. I’m either watching live bands or playing keyboards with The Willing Gales, a Brighton 8 piece band, Seadog or Laish, a London band with a new album coming out soon.  

Why did you decide to get involved with Brighton Soup?

BSoup-Sponsor-Bowl-The-Soup-DeptIt is an incredible initiative and focuses on having a positive effect on the local community. Who wouldn’t support it?  The ideas pitched are inspiring, the format is fun and it is an entertaining evening. Not only that, I’ve met some fascinating people.
